What is laser vaginal rejuvenation “Mona Lisa Touch” therapy?
Laser vaginal rejuvenation describes the latest advancement in medicine to treat vaginal symptoms that occur as a result of childbirth, menopause, radiation and chemotherapy post cancer, excess weight loss (>10kg) and for those suffering sexual discomfort. It can also be used on asymptomatic women to help tighten the vaginal walls and for these women has caught the name “designer vagina”. This treatment is virtually painless (most women just feel a tingle or vibration) and takes about 10minutes.
Our doctor has been treating women for 20years who suffer from vaginal symptoms. In addition she has been performing laser treatment for nearly the same time. Due to her vast experience in both areas, it became almost a must that she should be able to offer the service from our state of the art Day Hospital to ensure that the highest in medical standards are kept at all times. Be assured that our caring all female staff understand your possible distress, or embarrassment and may have even had the treatment themselves.
What symptoms does the Mona Lisa touch laser treat?
Every woman who gives birth vaginally will tell you that things are just not the same, in addition 50% of menopausal women suffer vaginal related symptoms. Women who have undergone chemotherapy to stop oestrogen production, or had a full hysterectomy or radiation therapy to the vaginal area also suffer with symptoms. Mona Lisa Touch Laser vaginal rejuvenation treats a large range of symptoms which include
- Vaginal dryness
- Vaginal atrophy (reduced collagen and elasticity of the walls resulting in thin skin that bleeds easily and may be painful during sexual intercourse)
- Vaginal itch and irritability
- Discomfort and pain during sex (dyspareunia)
- Reduced sexual vaginal stimulation
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Recurrent urinary symptoms of frequency and dysuria
- Recurrent vaginal infections such as thrush
- Stress incontinence
- Vaginal wall prolapse (can tighten the vaginal walls)
- Scarring from tears in childbirth
- The laser can also be used on the outside tissue to tighten and thicken the vulva tissue where it is loose or bleeds or is painful with trauma such as sexual intercourse . The Mona Lisa Touch can be used for vulva whitening.
How does it work?
The Mona Lisa Touch laser rejuvenates the vagina by destroying the old fragile vaginal walls and forcing the body to make new tighter collagen which improves blood flow to the area. This stimulates the production of the vaginal lubricants of the wall called “glycans” and stabilises the pH of the vaginal to prevent infections. The result is that the vaginal wall tissue contracts and lifts. The whole process is thus natural to the body.

Is it safe? Are there any side effects?
The experience of the operator makes this a very safe procedure. In addition it is carried out in our Day Hospital at no additional expense to our patients to ensure the highest in safety standards. The doctor simply has to clean the area and then insert the probe. She will then segmentally treat the entire vaginal wall as she slowly removes the probe. The whole process only takes a few minutes and with most women experiencing minimal or no discomfort. Afterwards the patient simply avoids irritants and trauma to the area for 3 to 5 days to allow full recovery.
How long will the results last? When will I see results and how many treatments will I need?
The Mona Lisa Touch laser is a resetting technique and thus longevity of results depends upon the patient. It can be elongated by using oestrogen creams and other HRT where appropriate. As collagenation is involved results seem to get better for up to 12 months. Thus most patients might opt for a single top- up treatment every year. Patients with severe vaginal atrophy or other symptoms might prefer to repeat the entire course. The initial treatment should be a series of 3 spaced at a month apart. Again, those with severe symptoms might choose to add additional treatments as they begin to feel better. Our doctor will help tailor to your specific needs. Many patients feel improvements within 2 weeks, but the real effects don’t start until after 6 weeks from the initial treatment. That’s when the body really begins its collagenation process.
What is the cost?
We understand that the astute patient values their health and selects their treating clinic based upon experience, and high standards of treatments rather than pricing, to help obtain maximal possible results. However be assured that at the ARGERA Centre all attempts have been made to keep costing down without compromising on standards of care. We can thus boast that treatments consistently remain some of the cheapest in Perth without compromising on quality. Currently the cost in Perth varies from $1100 to $1500 a treatment. At ARGERA we are able to provide the safety of a Day Hospital setting without the charge of one plus package the treatments to save patients hundreds! We also offer a 10% discount on the standard package price to patients with vaginal symptoms caused by chemo or radiation therapy for cancer. Some patients may need the full outer vulval/labia area treated which will have an additional surcharge. The doctor will be able to advise you if vulval treatment is recommended in your case. In addition ARGERA has weekend after-hours sessions at least once a month for those who work during the week. We also offer a free consultation with our senior nurse. Please contact our clinic for further details.
Do I need any special preparation?
Women undergoing laser vagina rejuvenation treatment should cease any creams and pessaries a week prior to treatment and not resume until after all treatments have finished. It may be possible that for some women that these creams are no longer needed. Patients should also refrain from sex the night before the treatments. There should be no active vaginal infection at the time of treatment. Women who are still menstruating should aim for treatment 1 week after their periods. All women should ensure that they are up-to-date with their pap smears and breast checks. Contraindications to vaginal laser rejuvenation include active abnormal cells or cancers (it will however not make cancer cells grow faster if present), active lesions from skin conditions such as psoriasis, lichen planus and lichen sclerosis in the area at the time of the treatment. At present there is research being conducted that uses the laser to treat such skin conditions! Women who have atrophy post chemo and radiation therapy should wait 6 months before having vaginal laser therapy.
Full recovery is usually within 3 to 5 days after the treatment and is usually asymptomatic. Care should be taken by not soaking in water or pools, avoiding douches and any chemical irritants. In addition women should refrain from sex during recovery and strenuous physical activity. They should wear underwear that allows the area to breathe. Women undergoing vulval treatments will take up to 10 days to fully heal and should proceed with the same aftercare. They may apply emollients to the area as recommended by the doctor.
Working with your doctor
Our doctor will always try to work with a patient’s general practioner, gynaecologist or oncologist to ensure a continuity of care where possible. We want our patients to experience maximal results from the procedure so that they no longer suffer needlessly from their vaginal symptoms. For this reason we encourage all women to have their pap smears and breast checks prior to treatment as they cannot be done on the day of the procedure.
How is Argera different?
Not all Mona Lisa Touch treatments are the same even if the same laser is being used. Concern should be given over the laser experience of the doctor and knowledge of women’s health, the facilities where the treatment occurs and the quality of care and understanding given by the staff. At ARGERA we have that all covered for you so that you can be reassured that you will receive the safest treatment with maximal possible results. Our doctor has had nearly 20years of experience in working with lasers and in women’s health, having worked in busy general practice clinics and major hospitals, has performed thousands of pap smear tests and breast exams and assisted in gynaecological surgery. All treatments are carried out in our Health Department licensed Day Hospital to ensure a purely medical treatment with sterilisation of equipment to hospital standards. Our staff are caring, understanding and may have personally had the treatment where needed. Our prices are exceptional value without compromising on the standard of care.
ARGERA keeps statistics and clinical data on all procedures so that we can provide the most successful treatment outcomes possible. We are very excited to tell you that to date all (bar one patient) have had an improvement in at least one of their symptoms after only one treatment! This matches the European data and we are very impressed with the Mona Lisa Touch!
